Insurance

Beekeepers with more than 3 (and up to 39) colonies can insure through Bee Disease Insurance (BDI) Scheme A, for which the premiums are payable through our Association. Premiums are for the calendar year and must be paid by 31 March. All colonies (including nuclei) should be insured, so it is important to pay the appropriate extra premium to cover all the colonies that you intend to work during the season.

Extra colony insurance can be added at any  time of year but cover only becomes effective after 6 weeks.

There is no specific minimum age to be insured. The junior must be in a position to bank a cheque issued by BDI in the event of a claim.

BeeBase

All beekeepers are encouraged to register with BeeBase a valuable beekeeping resource maintained by the National Bee Unit (NBU). This register enables the regional and seasonal bee inspectors to know where beekeepers and their apiaries are located and allows them to make contact in the case of a disease outbreak.

At the time of joining or renewing each member will be asked if they wish their data to be transferred to BeeBase.   No data will be passed without the member giving their permission.
